WINE TASTING WITH WOUTER
Host your own wine tasting
Pick a theme, put a few bottles on the table and give everyone space to discover their favourites.
Start with a theme
A theme gives you something to compare: one grape from different regions, wines from one country, or different styles alongside a meal. Six wines make a practical starting point. Keep the choices focused rather than trying to cover the whole wine world in one evening.
Prepare the table
Set out clean glasses, water, a spittoon and tasting notes. Use similar glasses for a fair comparison. Start with lighter, fresher wines before fuller styles. Small pours leave room to revisit favourites and help you pace the evening.
Let everyone taste first
Give guests a moment to smell and taste before revealing the labels or sharing your own impressions. You can pour blind for a bit of fun, then compare the answers. There is no need for everyone to agree on the winner.
Spitting is allowed. Aim for the spittoon.
I would rather see a lovely wine enjoyed than wasted. If you will be driving, though, I advise you to spit, and to arrange your transport sensibly. Spitting does not guarantee zero alcohol intake. Ask whether some of your favourite wine can come home with you in a properly sealed bottle.
