How to store wine at home
Good storage helps a wine stay in condition; it does not turn every bottle into a wine for ageing. Most wines are bought to be enjoyed relatively young. Check the style and intended drinking window before setting bottles aside for years.
Aim for stable conditions
Choose a cool, dark place with as little temperature fluctuation as possible. Avoid radiators, a sunny kitchen shelf and spaces that get hot in summer. A wine cabinet can help when you need controlled storage.
Think about the closure
Bottles with natural cork are commonly stored on their side for longer-term storage. Screwcap bottles do not need that position to keep the closure moist. Protect labels if you want to keep bottle information legible.
Keep a usable inventory
Record where the bottles are, how many you have and which ones you intend to open first. A cupboard, rack, shelf and box can each be an individual location. Update your records when you drink or move a bottle. CellarMemo is one way to keep that information together.
