What is a wine drinking window?

A drinking window is an estimated period when a wine is expected to be enjoyable. It helps organise a collection, but it cannot account for every bottle or every preference.

What shapes the estimate?

Grape variety, structure, vintage, producer and winemaking all matter. Storage conditions can change the outcome. Treat a general recommendation as a starting point and seek bottle-specific advice where possible.

Turn it into a plan

Group bottles into ‘open soon’, ‘try one’ and ‘keep longer’. If you have several of the same wine, open one to check its development. Update the window when your experience tells you something new.

Remember what you like

Some people enjoy youthful fruit; others prefer developed aromas. Your preferred window may be earlier or later than a reviewer’s. Keep a short tasting note and use it to decide when the next bottle should come out.
